ST. MICHAEL’S CHURCH

​St. Michael's Church, originally built in 1613 and later reconstructed in 1713, stands as one of Goa’s oldest religious edifices. Dedicated to St. Michael the Archangel, this historic site is a beautiful testament to the Portuguese colonial era, offering a serene escape just off the bustling Anjuna Beach Road. ​The exterior showcases classic Goan Baroque architecture, distinguished by its pristine whitewashed façade and imposing structure. The frontispiece features five bays and two prominent towers flanking the main entrance, creating an elegant and monumental appearance typical of early 17th-century Goan churches. ​Inside, the ornamental heart of the church is its striking main altar, dedicated to the patron saint, St. Michael. The archangel is often depicted triumphing over a demon and holding a scale. The chancel area and the high altar are richly decorated with intricate, gold-plated carvings and detailed ornamentation. ​The church houses a total of five altars, with the side altars dedicated to Nossa Senhora de Advogado and the Crucified Jesus. These interior decorative elements highlight the high degree of artistry, providing a vibrant contrast to the stark white exterior and maintaining the site's spiritual splendor. ​Annually, the Feast of St. Michael on September 29th draws large crowds, reinforcing the church's importance as a central cultural and religious pillar for the local community, preserving deep-rooted Goan Catholic traditions.

The moment I arrived at St. Michael's Church in Anjuna, I was instantly drawn to its beautiful arched doorways and windows — so elegant and timeless, I couldn’t resist stopping to take photos right away. The arches frame the structure so gracefully that every angle feels picture-perfect, making it a dream for anyone who loves architectural photography. Dating back to the early 17th century, this church carries a quiet charm, far from the bustle of Anjuna’s beaches and markets. Its whitewashed façade, peaceful surroundings, and minimalist beauty make it a refreshing contrast to the more tourist-heavy churches in Goa. Yet, it holds its own with dignity and a deep sense of history. Inside, the atmosphere is calm and meditative, with sunlight filtering through the arches and casting soft shadows that make the space feel sacred and serene. There’s something about this place that invites you to slow down and just breathe.

The Church of St. Michael was established in 1595 and is dedicated to S. Miguel. The Church was erected in 1603 by the visiting Jesuit Missionaries (jesuit missionary was established by Layola to the best of my knowledge during counter-reformation). Rebuilt in 1717 on the model of the famous Se Cathedral of Old Goa, this outstanding landmark is a most interesting specimen of colonial architecture of the 16th century. The Church has a large welcoming door and two towers on either side. The Portuguese style of architecture is the prime attraction of the church. You can also find St. Michael's body being displayed at a certain height in the church. It is a huge church and contains graveyard aside. 8-6-2022

The church is visited by tourists in large numbers to witness the statue of St. Michael with a scale in his left hand and a demon placed under his feet. Moreover, the tabernacle placed in the centre of the main altar also attracts visitors.
