Had visited this church to attend a wedding mass in the evening. Parking is available inside and outside the church premises. The church is located near the Mandovi river. The view from the church of the river and the boats passing by is amazing. The church itself is beautiful inside and outside. It was really good to visit as not many churches are seen in such serene locations. Definitely worth visiting!
The Church of Our Lady of Penha de França is a total hidden gem, and the best part isn't even the church building. It's the location! It sits high up where two rivers meet, giving you a seriously stunning, wide-open view of the water and the nearby islands. It’s incredibly peaceful and one of the best places in Goa to catch a beautiful sunset.
The church itself is a gorgeous, bright white example of old Portuguese architecture. It was originally built by sailors, which is a cool bit of history! Skip the crowded spots and come here for an afternoon of quiet reflection and incredible photos. It’s got that chill, beautiful, and slightly off-the-beaten-path Goa vibe you're looking for.
Attended nuptials here. Gorgeous Church, right by the river looking at Chorao Island on one side and to the Ribandar Causeway on the other. Architecture is grand, and beautiful. Church is well maintained.
This church is beautiful. The entrance to the church with the Grotto made, the space to have wedding receptions and the short climb up to the Church situated at the top. The view from there is breathtaking as it overlooks into water.
You get to see some boats floating around, going about the business. Since it was festive season the church surroundings were decorated.
Nestled in the serene landscapes of Goa, the Church of Our Lady of Penha de França stands as a testament to the quiet beauty that often eludes mainstream tourist radar. While it may not boast the same fame as the Se Cathedral or Basilica of Bom Jesus, this hidden gem has its own unique charm that appeals to those seeking a more intimate and contemplative experience.
Praise:
Quiet Location: One of the defining features of the Church of Our Lady of Penha de França is its secluded location. Far from the hustle and bustle of more popular tourist spots, the tranquility surrounding the church creates a peaceful atmosphere conducive to reflection and prayer. It's a haven for those looking to escape the crowds and enjoy a moment of serenity.
Photogenic: The church, with its simple yet elegant architectural design, presents a delightful subject for photographers. The soft hues of the façade, coupled with the lush greenery in the surroundings, make it a photogenic spot that captures the essence of Goa's colonial history.
Scenic Views: Perched atop a hill, the Church of Our Lady of Penha de França offers panoramic views of the Goan landscape. The vantage point provides a unique perspective, allowing visitors to appreciate not only the architectural beauty of the church but also the natural splendor that surrounds it.
Criticism:
Limited Recognition: Unfortunately, this hidden gem suffers from a lack of recognition beyond a few travel blogs and within the local community. Compared to the grandeur of the Se Cathedral and the historical significance of the Basilica of Bom Jesus, the Church of Our Lady of Penha de França remains relatively unknown to the broader tourist circuit.
Understated Presence: In a region brimming with iconic landmarks, the church's understated presence might cause it to be overshadowed by its more famous counterparts. This is particularly evident when travelers, drawn by the allure of the more prominent attractions, might overlook the quieter charm that this church exudes.
Conclusion:
For those willing to venture off the beaten path, the Church of Our Lady of Penha de França promises a peaceful retreat into history. While it may not command the same attention as some of Goa's more celebrated sites, its quiet ambiance, photogenic allure, and scenic views make it a worthwhile destination for those seeking a more contemplative and intimate experience. It serves as a reminder that Goa's beauty extends beyond the well-trodden tourist trail and that sometimes, the most memorable discoveries are found in the quieter corners of this enchanting region.
